Collecting the ball on the left wing, Adingra ducked and dived between three challenges before receiving Facundo Buonanotte’s most fitting Cruyff-turn pass and tucking the ball past Foderingham. Buonanotte the second ‘good night’ of the week for the Albion faithful.
They ought to have been more comfortably ahead by half time and will certainly reflect on that when debriefing this match. Following a slick exchange of passes with Adam Lallana, Fati was denied by a brilliant stop from Foderingham.
Buonanotte had also struck the side netting when Jack Robinson had failed to clear a free-kick and then Foderingham again performed acrobatics on the stroke of half time to deny Billy Gilmour’s dipping 30-yard volley.
Brighton were far from their brilliant best here but they didn’t need to be. Sheffield United, having finally won a game against Wolves last weekend, were non-existent in an attacking sense in the first half.
De Zerbi introduced Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma at half time and Albion again started quickly, with the Japanese forward integral to their most dangerous moments. After he’d bamboozled Jayden Bogle, Foderingham was again on hand to block at close range.
The Blades were more spirited in the second half and were given further encouragement when Dahoud cynically raked his studs down the back of Ben Osborn’s calf before immediately being sent off by John Brookes with 22 minutes to play.
Sheffield United needed only five minutes to capitalise and equalised when Bogle smashed a low ball across the six-yard box and Adam Webster had little choice but to turn it into his own goal.
They soon went close to a second as Cameron Archer cleverly laid the ball off to Bogle who dragged his shot wide.
It was all too much for De Zerbi who was booked by Brookes after remonstrating with the fourth official. A frustrating day to round off a memorable week.
