The Boston Celtics may soon be getting back to full strength.
Star center and offseason acquisition Kristaps Porzingis took to Instagram to let fans know that he’d be suiting up for the team’s next game, Friday at home against the New York Knicks.
Porzingis has missed the last four games due to a calf injury.
The 28-year-old last played on Nov. 24 against the Orlando Magic, when he was limited to a season-low 22 minutes of action. Porzingis took the court and started in 15 of the team’s first 16 contests.
Four-time All-Star forward Jayson Tatum has played in all 20 games for the Eastern Conference-best Celtics thus far, while fellow All-Star forward Jaylen Brown has been in 19 contests. All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday (another offseason pickup) has missed only two games and shooting guard Derrick White has played and started in 17 of the first 20 games.
An All-Star during his third NBA season with the Knicks in 2017-18, Porzingis has never been on a team with this much talent, this much depth and such high championship expectations. With the loaded roster surrounding him, Porzingis’ numbers may not jump out this season as much as in previous years, but his health is paramount to Boston’s title hopes.
The former fourth overall pick is averaging 18.9 points this season (his lowest since the 2016-17 campaign) and 6.7 rebounds per game (his lowest since the 2017-18 season). Porzingis is also shooting a career-high 54.7% from the field.
