Police surround Prague university building after deadly shooting
A gunman at a Prague university has killed at least 15 people and injured about 30 others before being “eliminated” by police, Czech emergency services say.
Police chiefs said the gunman was a student at the faculty of arts at Charles University in Jan Palach Square, but they did not identify him.
Images and videos show crowds of people fleeing the scene, and one chilling picture shows eight students perched on a ledge high up outdoors, apparently to hide from the gunman.
The philosophy department was evacuated and the square was sealed off as the horror unfolded. Police urged people to leave the surrounding streets and those already indoors to stay inside.
An email sent to staff and students at the faculty had warned that a gunman was in one of its buildings and had told staff to stay put.
Prague’s rescue service said about 30 people suffered various injuries, including nine who were seriously wounded.
Czech prime minister Petr Fiala cancelled his scheduled events to head for Prague.
Gunman was student at university he targeted
The gunman who killed at least 15 people at the university was a student there, police have said.
Officials and the Czech Republic’s interior ministry earlier said the suspect was dead.
