The Washington Commanders may be nearing the end of their rope with quarterback Sam Howell.
Howell was benched during the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, with the Commanders trailing 27-7. He was replaced by veteran backup Jacoby Brissett.
This marks the second consecutive week that Howell was benched, though the decision came much later in last week’s contest. He was just 6-for-22 for 56 yards with two interceptions when the Commanders made the decision to bench him.
Howell only looked worse after Brissett immediately led the Commanders on a touchdown drive after coming in.
One has to wonder if Howell’s recent play is sealing his fate for 2024 and beyond. The Commanders hoped he might be their franchise quarterback, but he has not looked it, and he has performed poorly during the team’s five-game losing streak.
With major staff changes almost certain, Washington may want to start anew with a new quarterback next year, especially with a potential top-five draft pick on the way.
