The Montreal Canadiens lost, 4-3, to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night, but they at least get the honor of scoring what might be the weirdest goal of the NHL season so far.
With the Canadiens already leading 1-0 midway through the second period, there was a massive confusion when the Lightning, as well as the arena operations staff, thought play had been stopped.
The DJ started playing music, the Lightning stopped playing and went off for a line change, and goalie Jonas Johansson went for a skate around his own end of the rink and left his net abandoned.
The only problem is that the whistle never blew. It was still a live play. Canadiens defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic was the only person that seemed to realize this and shot the puck the length of the ice into the abandoned net for one of the easiest — and weirdest — goals of his career.
Have a look,
