It required some obstinate defending from the French visitors to keep him at bay, but hinted at the possibilities on offer for Sanderson’s side.
Soon after, Carpenter dived on a clever grubber kick by scrum-half Guss Warr in the left corner, but the score was disallowed by the TMO with the full-back having knocked on.
Then came a fine burst from Tuilagi which took him close once more before Stade scored in quite exhilarating fashion.
Hooker Lucas Peyresblanques threw the ball in from a line-out 10 metres inside Sale’s half and from there Stade fashioned a delightful handling sequence which ripped their hosts apart.
Scrum-half Hugo Zabala sent the ball to the left channel where the ball went through several pairs of hands.
Full-back Leo Barre supported the attack superbly and beat his opposite number Carpenter before offloading to wing Kylan Hamdaoui.
He then showed intelligence to find his captain in support with a neat inside pass and Ward finished with deadly aplomb.
But Tuilagi, who was involved in some heavy collisions, earned a penalty which Ford converted from long range to make it 6-5 at the break.
The second half belonged to Sale and Ford added another penalty before O’Flaherty scored their first try in the 53rd minute, diving in at the left corner after a neat move involving replacement scrum-half Raffi Quirke cut through Stade’s defensive line.
Hill was then sent in at the left corner before Dugdale, who had an earlier try ruled out, went over from close range for Sale’s third try.
