It might be Super Bowl or bust for Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy this season.
On Saturday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the sentiment around the league, including in Dallas, is that “McCarthy will be measured by how Dallas’ final game goes.”
The Cowboys have already clinched a playoff berth and could win the NFC East for the second time in three seasons with a win on Sunday against the Washington Commanders. A win would also give Dallas its third consecutive 12-win season, which only happened one other time in franchise history, from 1992-95 when the Cowboys had four consecutive seasons of at least 12 wins.
Despite the franchise’s regular season success, it hasn’t made it past the divisional round of the playoffs since 1995, its last Super Bowl win.
The Cowboys lost to the 49ers during the playoffs the past two seasons but might avoid them until the conference championship game if both make it that far. San Francisco clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC in Week 17 while Dallas will clinch the 2-seed with a Week 18 win.
If McCarthy is unable to get past the Niners for the third year in a row or, worse yet, lose before a potential rematch, it wouldn’t be surprising for owner Jerry Jones to look for another head coach for the 2024 season.
He probably wouldn’t have to look very far. In February 2023, Jones gave defensive coordinator Dan Quinn a contract worth $4.5 to $5 million for the 2023 season, and promoting the former Falcons head coach after the phenomenal job he’s done with the Cowboys defense would be a logical step for the Cowboys long-time owner to take.
That won’t be necessary if McCarthy leads Dallas to the promised land. This next month will likely determine how much longer he remains Cowboys head coach.
